The purpose of this page is start exploring the complexity challenges that face urban systems and the CSS tools that may help in exploring and understanding the dynamics of urban systems. This information will be used to "seed" discussions at the workshop.

Workshop participants are encouraged to contribute a short paper or commentary before or after the workshop. People not participating in the workshop are also to contribute thoughts.


  • Fragmented nature of policy development. Policy for urban areas is developed across different sectors and organisations. For example, urban water policy and regulations are developed for the following purposes: provision of drinking water, flood management, environmental protection, recreation etc This can lead to policy failure where there is a lack of consideration of feedbacks that may result in synergies or conflicts between social, environmental and economic objectives.
